BERT is the Building Emergency Response Team here at MESMS. This team consists of administrators, staff, parents, and local police: Mrs. Grimm, Mr. Shiland, Mrs. Amerling,
Mr. Coleman, Mrs. D’Angelo, Mrs. DePaola, Mr. DiPasquale, Mrs. Epstein, Mr. Falxa, Mrs. Gibney, Mrs. Gilberti, Mrs. Goldberg, Mrs. Jarvie, Mrs. Morales, Mrs. Musso, Mr. Nansen,
Mrs. O’Connell, Mrs. Picco, Mr. Stejskal, Officer Eidelman of the Yorktown Police Department.
BERT has become an intricate part of the operation of our building designed to help promote confidence and stability among students, staff and parents should a crisis situation occur.
BERT meets once a month (or more if necessary) to discuss issues relating to the safety and well being of Strang’s students and staff. This fall, BERT has been concentrating on the implementation and smooth running of various emergency drills such as a “Fire Drill in between classes,” a “Staff All Call to the Cafeteria during the Lunch Periods,” a “Fire Drill during the Lunch Periods,” and a “Lockdown.” During these important practice drills, as well as during any actual emergency situation, BERT wears fluorescent orange vests and carries walkie talkies. It is through these valuable practice drills and their critical evaluation that we are able to make Mildred E. Strang Middle School a safe learning and working environment.
