Tom Jacobs, Bruce Apar and his wife Elyse presented the check to the Board of Education to purchase new seats for the remodeled high school auditorium.

Grace Foundation Makes a Positive Impact with Operation Positive Role Model
More than 70 Mildred E. Strang Middle School students received accolades, recognition and rewards for contributing to Operation Project Role Model, at the Grace Foundation annual dinner held earlier this month. Students Kristen Burke, Domenica Scannapieco and Anna Carbone were awarded $1,000 scholarship for their outstanding behavior and spontaneous acts of kindness throughout the year. Yorktown Scores Scholar Athlete Team Honors Every Spring Team Earns NYSPHSAA Distinction
The eight spring Varsity athletic teams of the Yorktown Central School District have been honored with the New York State Public High School Scholar Athlete Award for achieving academic excellence while participating in varsity level interscholastic athletics. Hearty congratulations to the athletes and their coaches of these teams: Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Golf, Softball, Baseball, Boys Tennis, Boys Track & Field, Girls Track & Field. This is the second season in a row our athletes have achieved this level of excellence.
Board Appoints High School Principal The Yorktown Central School District Board of Education appointed Mr. Joseph DeGennaro principal of Yorktown High School, effective July 1, 2008. Mr. DeGennaro, a Yorktown resident, has been the Assistant Principal at Irvington High School for the past eight years. Prior to his position in Irvington, Mr. DeGennaro was the Athletic Director at Hastings High School. District Recognized for Academic Achievement
The Yorktown Central School District has been recognized by the New York State Education Department as a High Performing/Gap Closing district for continuous improvements on NYS assessments. Brookside Elementary School, Crompond Elementary School, Mildred E. Strang Middle School and Yorktown High School met or exceeded New York State standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, and made Adequate Yearly Progress in both areas under federal No Child Left Behind regulations.

An historical marker honoring the contribution of the French to America's independence will be dedicated at 12:30pm Friday, May 30 at the French Hill School, the site of a French encampment along the Washington - Rochambeau Trail that stretches from Rhode Island to Yorktown, Virginia. The marker's sign was created by the students in Mr. Christopher DiPasquale's Living History class at the Mildred E. Strang Middle School, and is the culmination of a year's investigation and collaborative study that enriched the education of all involved. >> Read more
Music & Culture of the 60s Come to MESMS MESMS 8th grade students were treated to the fab trio, "Squeaky Clean" who performed The 1960s – Decade of Turmoil and Triumph. The local musicians showed video from the era, shared sing-alongs and narrated events of the period while performing a 60s selection from the Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, the Doors, Aretha Franklin and more. The multimedia and music presentation brings history a little closer to life as the music reflected the struggle of the civil rights movement, the new hope of space travel, the conflict of the politics and the chaos of war.

The Liberty Science Center had Mildred E. Strang middle schooler’s hair standing on end as they ushered in their “science sportacular.” The Liberty Center staff brought Sir Isaac Newton’s and Tesla’s laws to life and illustrated how energy works in real time. And, yes, with her hand on the electromagnetic ball, her hair stood up as those electrons did their dance.
High School Principal Search Underway
An educational leadership search firm has been appointed by the Yorktown Central School District Board of Education to conduct a search for a high school principal. At its meeting last week, the Board appointed Orchard Hill Consulting to direct the search. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Napolitano recently met with Dr. Ernest Piermarini and Dr. Kathleen Zazza of the firm to discuss the search protocol and procedures, and the timeline in which the search will be conducted. Ms. O'Shea succeeds Dr. Joel Feldman, who is retiring June 30th after eleven years with the Yorktown Central School District. The youngsters accumulated more than 7,000 fifteen minute reading sessions during out-of-school hours as they went "Bananas Over Reading". Accomplished Athletes Danielle Bonner placed 1st in the State Gymnastics Competition in the Uneven Bars Event and placed 3rd overall in the State Individual Competition. And bowler Anna Young had the highest game score in the state with a 245, placing 11th overall. This outstanding athlete is also the recipient of the Section I Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations also go to Evan Palumbo and Dan Mason for their outstanding performance at the State Swimming and Diving Meet this weekend.
French Hill Students Go Bananas Over Reading Beginning Friday, and continuing throughout the month of March, French Hill students plan to rack-up 5,000 sessions of reading time during non-school hours. The goals of the school's read-a-thon are to heighten the children’s awareness and love of reading and to strengthen the parent/teacher partnership. The month long focus on reading includes Bring a Stuffed Animal Day (to read to), a visit from illustrator Brian Pinkney, No TV Day, Guest Reader Day, and lots of surprises.
YHS Jazz Band Brings Their Joy of Music to the Young & Young at Heart The Yorktown High School Jazz Band tore up the town this week as they stepped out on their annual whirlwind tour of all four elementary schools and the Country House, a long term care residence for adults in Yorktown Heights. It was such a great day for everyone. We couldn't tell who had more fun, the very appreciative audiences or the very enthusiastic and talented musicians and their teachers, Emily Kluga and Jeff Whalen.

The inquisitive youngsters completed another signature Science Expo. The annual event requires each student to roll up their sleeves and dig deep and investigate using the Scientific Method. The investigative process and the scientific method is part of a larger program to build math and science skills that will follow students through high school and university. Ms. Sullivan Shares Her School Nursing Expertise Yorktown High School Nurse Coordinator Victoria Sullivan spoke to other school nurses from around the region on the Role of the School Nurse in Managing Intoxication and Withdrawal in a School Setting at a workshop sponsored by Westchester County and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. She addressed parental involvement, collaborating with other schools system and community based professionals.

Andrew Wu Advances to Intel Semifinals
We are delighted to report that Yorktown High School senior Andrew Wu was named a semifinalist in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest science competition. Andrew is one of 300 semifinalists from throughout the country who will now compete for 40 finalist slots at the Science Talent Institute in March. The Science Research Program at Yorktown High School provides students with the opportunity to pursue scientific research at a college graduate level.

Yorktown Welcomes First Director of Wellness Laura Tolosi, a registered dietician, has been appointed Director of Wellness for the Yorktown Central School District. Ms. Tolosi will be responsible for promoting district wellness policies, implementing wellness programs for students and staff, building community partnerships and seeking grants to support District goals. Fifth Annual Holiday Wrestling Tournament Ten teams from throughout the region competed in the North County News Holiday Wrestling Classic Tournament hosted by the Yorktown Central School District. Yorktown senior Mike Ahearn dominated his 130 lb. weight class and was nominated most Outstanding Wrestler award at the tourney for the second year in a row. Nick Genovese, a 160 lb. junior, won all five of his matches and is 7-0 for the year.

Yorktown Central School District Receives 125K Grant from Grace Foundation Grant Supports Middle School Positive Role Model Program
The school community was out in force to say thank you to the F. Cecil Grace Foundation for its commitment to the positive character development of our middle school students. The foundation presented the District with a $125,000 grant to fund Project Positive Role Model, which reinforces the youngster's spontaneous acts of kindness. The grant also funds anti-bullying initiatives developed by the Mildred E. Strang Middle School faculty and staff.
French Hill Wee Deliver Post Office Moves the Mail Neither snow nor rain not heat nor gloom of night stays these French Hill couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. The collectors, sorters, carriers and postmasters at French Hill Elementary school are gaining some powerful real-world experiences in the Wee Deliver Mail program, a literacy partnership with the United States Postal Service that mirrors community life.

Nineteen Participate in All States Festival Nineteen students from the Yorktown Central School District participated in the 2007 Area All-State Festival held on Thursday, November 8th at the SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center. College Board Recognizes YHS Senior The College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program has honored Scott Bender, a Yorktown High School senior, for his academic excellence.
The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1983, provides national recognition for exceptional academic achievement. Each year the NHRP identifies approximately 3,300 of the highest scoring students from a nationwide total of 124,000 high school juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT in the 11th grade, and designated themselves as Hispanic.
Fifty Seven Students Awarded AP Scholar Status
Fifty seven Yorktown High School student are among the top 18 percent of students worldwide who performed well enough in the college-level Advanced Placement exams to earn the designation of AP Scholar.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.
Students took the AP exams in May of 2007 after completing challenging college level courses at Yorktown High School.
One Yorktown student qualified for the prestigious award of National Scholar. This is the highest award given to students who receive an average grade of at least 4 in all AP exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Twenty two students received “Scholar with Distinction” awards by scoring an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams Sixteen students qualified for ”Scholar with Honor” awards by receiving an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams. Eighteen students received “Scholar” awards scoring a 3 or higher on three or more exams.
Introducing Leo Sposato, Director of Communications Leo Sposato is no stranger to the Yorktown Central School District. As an English and TV Production/Film teacher at Yorktown High School for ten years, he knows the importance of effective communication and the power of language.
Tax Relief
In July of 2007, the Yorktown Central School District Board of
Education returned an additional $200,000 to tax payers. This action
reduced the tax rate increase from 5.10% to 4.78% in the Town of Yorktown and further increased the tax rate cuts in the towns of New
Castle and Cortlandt. The money became avaliable as a result of
operating surpluses from the 2006-2007 school year. When combined with
the $600,000 previously used to reduce taxes in the upcoming budgetyear, Yorktown residents will have benefited from $800,000 in total tax
relief.
In addition, the Board of Education passed a resolution mandating that
all unreserved fund balance monies in excess of $1.5 million, be
returned to taxpayers in the 2008-2009 school year. As of the date of
this article, this translates into at least an additonal $450,000 in tax
relief that residents can expect in 2008.
Board of Education Meets Monday, July 23 The Yorktown Central School District Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting Monday, July 23, 2006 beginning at 5:00pm in the Administration Conference Room, 2725 Crompond Road. The Board will be meeting to discuss the final 2006-07 fund balance and tax warrant, andwill meet with a candidate wishing to be considered for the vacancy left by Board trustee, Joyce McCoy.

Mrs. Jackie Carbone was elected President of the Yorktown Central School District Board of Education by her fellow Trustees at the Annual Reorganization Meeting July 9th. Mrs. Karen Corrado was elected Vice-President. Both terms are for one year.
